By 2025 Faf du Plessis has retired from Test cricket but is still active in limited-overs and a majority of the T20 leagues around the world. His contribution to cricket is outstanding and has made him a host performance in franchise competitions, e.g.
Retirement from Test Cricket

In February 2021 du Plessis retired from the test format, and, as a result, ended a career spanning 69 test matches. He explained that he wanted to concentrate on T20 cricket and play a role in the shorter forms of the game. He made a significant number of match-winning innings for the contribution to the total experience of his Test career and received wide praise for his leadership and his capacity to lead the way and hold the innings tight under duress.
Limited-Overs Cricket Status
Although du Plessis is no longer active in Test sport (Test Cricket) he has not officially retired from One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). However, his most recent gesture to the ODI was in 2019, and the most recent T20I in 2020. Even when he performed well in different T20 leagues, he has never been included in the South West Africa squad for big events such as the 2021 and 2022 World T20 Cups.
T20 Leagues and Franchise Cricket
Du Plessis has been a regular in T20 leagues around the globe. He served as captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) from 2022 to 2024, and in so doing helped RCB reach many playoffs. However, he was not signed to RCB (Royal Challengers Bangalore) during the 2025 season, that is to say, he was one of the key players during the IPL mega auction.

In addition to playing the IPL, he has also participated in some of the world’s major T20 leagues (e.g., Pakistan Super League (PSL), Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), Big Bash League (BBL), and South Africa’s SA20). His performances in these encounters furthered the perception of being one of the most reliable and stable of all of the batsmen in T20 cricket.
Potential Return to International Cricket
Despite his absence from the national team in recent years, du Plessis has expressed his interest in making a comeback, particularly for the T20 World Cup. He’s left his door open to go back and play South Africa when the situation arises and has shown, at the same time, his lasting dedication to the game. But that path of membership depends on management choices by Cricket South Africa and ahead on team strategy.
Conclusion
Even after the retirement of Faf du Plessis from the element of Test cricket, he continues to be a success in the element of T20 leagues all over the world. His leadership, experience and batting ability give him an added value when it comes to the shortest format of the game. Whatever the fate of the game in the international arena, or whether his involvement in franchise cricket continues, deep change is in place as a result of his contribution.
