Humble Beginnings & Education

Ratan Naval Tata was born in Mumbai on 28 December 1937. He came from a renowned Parsi family. His parents divorced, and his grandmother, Navajbai Tata, brought him up. He received early education in Mumbai and Shimla and then went to the U.S. to attend Cornell University to study architecture and graduated in 1959. He later attended an Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 1975.

From Shop Floor to Boardroom

On his return to India, Ratan started his career on the shop floor at Tata Steel in 1962. Promoted along the way, he took charge of Tata Industries in 1981. In 1991, he took over as Chairman of Tata Sons, assuming charge of India’s biggest conglomerate.

Bold Expansion & Global Vision

Ratan Tata remoulded the group as a world giant. He spearheaded path-breaking acquisitions: Tetley (2000), Corus (2007), and Jaguar Land Rover (2008). He introduced bold projects such as the Tata Indica and the low-cost Tata Nano. While not all projects were successful, these bold initiatives made Tata a world innovator.

Ethical Leadership & Corporate Culture

Famed for his humility and integrity, Tata instituted retirement standards and clear governance. His direct approach and disdain for publicity raised trust levels. In times of crisis—such as assisting employees after the 26/11 Mumbai attacks—he showed compassion and firm leadership.

Philanthropy & Personal Values

A committed philanthropist, Tata remained committed to health, education, and rural development through Tata Trusts—even after retiring in 2012 and temporarily resuming for a short stint in 2016. He adopted a simple living despite unlimited power and money. He was a lover of dogs and made sure stray dogs were looked after in Tata offices.

Legacy of Service & Unwavering Vision

Ratan Tata’s vision extended beyond profits. He supported innovation, startups, and societal welfare. Under his watch, Tata Group’s revenues grew over 22% annually, and global presence increased substantially. He remained the highest donor at Cornell University and held numerous honours—Padma Bhushan (2000), Padma Vibhushan (2008), honorary knighthood (2014), Assam Baibhav (2021), among others.

Final Days & Enduring Influence

Ratan Tata died on 9 October 2024 aged 86. He was given a state funeral in Mumbai on 10 October as dignitaries offered their respects. Joined by industry leaders such as Piyush Goyal and Amit Shah, business contemporaries such as Bill Gates and Howard Schultz paid homage to his legacy.
