Career Trajectory

Sunil Mittal started out in the early 1970s with a small-scale business, which saw the manufacture of crankshafts for local bicycle manufacturers out of an investment of around 20,000. In the coming years, he diversified into the import of portable generators, but the business did not do well, which was a result of government import policies.

In 1984, Mittal saw the growth in the telecom sector and put together push-button telephones, which at the time were foreign to the Indian market. In 1992, he acquired one of the first mobile network licenses in India and in 1995 put out Bharti Cellular, which later became Bharti Airtel, which is to date one of India’s largest telecom players. Under his leadership, the Bharti Group grew beyond telecom to also include insurance, real estate, retail, food processing and space data communication.

Bharti Airtel at present has a presence in many markets in Asia and Africa, where we have served hundreds of millions of customers and played a large role in the digital transformation in India.
