In Test matches, maiden overs carry great importance because the bowlers bowl long spells. Batsmen who are kept under pressure for long spell are prone to errors, hence making them prone to mistakes and lose their wicket.

One-Day Internationals:
In the one day format, keeping an economy rate is very important. Maiden overs restrict the opposition from scoring and help in building pressure, especially during the middle overs.

T20 Cricket:
Maiden overs are rarely seen in T20 matches, but they are extremely effective. Their existence can upset the rhythm of the batting side and thereby swing the momentum towards the bowling side.
