Early Life and Background
A Kabaddi hub, Nizampur, in Haryana, hosts Rohit Kumar Chillar’s home. He was fortunate to have his formative years training under the likes of Manjeet Chhillar and Rakesh Kumar, who worked with him and other young athletes.
A large influence in his life has been his father, who served in the Delhi Police. A successful Kabaddi player, Rohit had a chance to get inducted into the Indian Navy under the sports quota in the year 2009.
International Career
Rohit Kumar fulfilled his childhood dream of representing India when he debuted at the 2016 South Asian Games held in Guwahati and Shillong. His remarkable performance contributed to India’s gold medal victory. He was also part of India’s squad for the 2018 Kabaddi Masters in Dubai.
Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) Career
PKL Debut and Early Success
Rohit made his PKL debut in Season 3 with Patna Pirates, where he made an immediate impact, scoring 109 raid points and earning the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
Record-Breaking Performances
Became the first player to score over 30 points in a single match, achieving 32 raid points against UP Yoddha in Season 5.
He joined Bengaluru Bulls in Season 4 and was later appointed as the captain in Season 6.
Over the years, he has consistently crossed the 100-point mark in every season of PKL right from Season 3 till Season 7.
Playing Style
Rohit is famous for his Frog Jump, which is basically a raiding technique where he jumps over defenders, touches them while in air, and lands beyond their reach.
Controversy: Marriage and Legal Issues
Between 2012 and 2016, Rohit Kumar remained wed to Lalita Das. Sadly, she took her own life in 2016, leaving a note and audio recordings holding Rohit and his family responsible for dowry harassment. Both Rohit and his father were arrested but released on bail. Rohit has vehemently denied the charges leveled against him and released a video expressing his sorrow, insisting that he loved his wife and would assist the authorities in clearing his name.
