The well known Indian rapper and songwriter KR$NA is actually Krishna Kaul. He is credited for helping to shape Indian hip-hop and is considered one of its pioneers. KR$NA, formerly known as Prozpekt, rose to fame in the underground rap scene before becoming well known. In the Desi Hip-Hop scene he is well known for his fierce rhymes, skillful lyrics, and noteworthy rap battles.

Early Life and Background
Born on October 4, 1989, in New Delhi, India, KR$NA hails from a Kashmiri Pandit family. A significant part of his childhood was spent in South London, where he was first introduced to hip-hop culture. His initial motivation for rapping was to connect with local kids in London but it soon developed into a passion. After completing his schooling in the United Kingdom he returned to India and pursued his higher education at Hansraj College, followed by PG from St. Xavier’s College.

Career and Breakthrough
KR$NA started his rap career at a young age, releasing his first song at just 18 years old on MySpace in 2006. He gained local recognition in New Delhi and collaborated with international artists from the USA and Canada. However, his big break came in 2010 with the song “Kaisa Mera Desh”, which became one of the most-watched Indian hip-hop videos on YouTube.

In 2013, he collaborated with the NGO Save The Children for a social cause and released the song “Vijay.” The same year marked a turning point in his career as he signed with Universal Music and rebranded from Prozpekt to KR$NA.

Under Universal Music, KR$NA released his first official single “Sellout,” in 2014 but due to poor marketing, it did not gain much traction. Despite setbacks he became the first Indian rapper to embark on a five-city album tour with a live band, cementing his place in the hip-hop scene. His breakthrough hit came in 2016 with the song “Vyanjan.”

Major Collaborations and Achievements
In 2017, KR$NA joined KALAMKAAR, a hip-hop label founded by Raftaar and Ankit Khanna. By 2018 he became a partner and a key figure in the label and his association with Raftaar helped him gain more visibility leading to several successful collaborations. In 2019, he even delivered a talk at TEDxMSI sharing insights into his journey in the music industry.

Controversies and Legal Issues
KR$NA gained notoriety in 2020 after accusing Disney+ Hotstar and the IPL of plagiarism. He asserted that his 2017 song “Dekh Kaun Aaya Wapas” was a ripoff of the IPL anthem “Ayenge Hum Wapas.” Pranav Ajayrao Malpe, the composer refuted these claims claiming they were unfounded.

KR$NA stands 6 feet (1.82 meters) tall and weighs about 76 kg (167 lbs), giving him a powerful presence. His passionate rap image is complemented by his deep-set black eyes and black hair.
