Washington Sundar – Indian All-Round Cricketer
Washington Sundar is an Indian cricketer of repute good for his calm attitude, versatility, and ability to deliver in crunch situations. Born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu on October 5, 1999, Washington got introduced to cricket at a very early age by his father M. Sundar, who was himself a cricket enthusiast. The budding young cricketer’s early days of development were aided by renowned St. Bede’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School who strengthened many future talents from the region.

He was originally a top-order batsman and later changed his role to that of an off-spin bowling all-rounder, a decent batsman who bowls sharp, economical off-spin.

Domestic and IPL Career
The first-class debut in the year 2016 came to Washington Sundar when he directly impressed his Tamil Nadu teammates with an immediate impact at Ranji Trophy level. Consistent bowling, coupled with cricket intelligence and an unflinching temperament, won him the respect of selectors and fans.

The year 2017 marked the biggest breakthrough for him in the Indian Premier League season while he played for ‘Rising Pune Supergiant’. His performances that were delivered on the biggest occasions, especially in the playoffs, put him on the map as one of the youngest players to have played in an IPL final. Not only did he perform well, but he also did it with great composure on the big stage.

International Career
Washington debuted in T20I for India in December 2017 against Sri Lanka. Further, he became a regular member of India’s limited-overs sides, mainly because of his ability to bowl in the powerplay and restrict runs. Such consistent performances in white-ball cricket also saw him being named in India’s Test squad for the Australia tour of 2020-21.

One of Washington’s most prized memories came in the Gabba Test, Brisbane, January 2021. His entry in the team was a result of injuries to frontline players; in that Test, he scored crucial 62 runs and bagged wickets of significance, thus being a major player in the historic series win of India against Australia.

Playing Style and Physical Attributes
At 6 feet 1 inch (185 cm), Sundar always uses his height as an asset to extract bounce and drift that harass the batters on hard pitches. His high-arm action and unblemished bowling style make him quite dependable in all formats.

Key Records and Milestones
At just 18 years of age, he joined an elite group of Indian cricketers who took 3 wickets and scored a half-century on Test debut.

Played a crucial role in the 2017 IPL playoffs, delivering strong performances despite being one of the most affordable players in the tournament.

Age and Current Status
As of now, Washington Sundar is 25 years old. Despite facing a few injury setbacks, he has already experienced the pressures of international cricket and continues to evolve as a key player for India and in the IPL, representing franchises like Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
