Jasprit Bumrah: India’s Pace Spearhead
Early Life and Background
Jasprit Jasbirsingh Bumrah was born on December 6, 1993, in Ahmedabad into a Punjabi Sikh family. The father fell away when Bumrah was only 5, and then his mother, Daljit Kaur, a school principal, single-handedly brought him up. Despite the struggles of financial constraints, she encouraged Bumrah toward cricket and supported him to follow his dreams. Bumrah commenced his cricketing journey with Sanjay Patel, a former cricketer cum coach from Gujarat. The style of bowling and pace first brought him into notice during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy of 2013, paving the way for a very promising career.
Domestic Career and the IPL Experience

Bumrah made his debut for the state of Gujarat in domestic cricket in 2013, but his career underwent a tremendous turn the moment John Wright spotted him and drafted him for the IPL. Under the guidance of Lasith Malinga, he honed his skills to become the mainstay of the Mumbai Indians (MI) bowling attack. From there, he began his rise to stardom, with a highlight being his final in the 2017 IPL when he defended 14 runs against Pune Supergiant to secure the title for MI. He has to this day been the backbone of several IPL titles for MI, delivering under pressure consistently.
International Career

Bumrah’s international debut came in early 2016, playing both ODIs and T20Is against Australia. He quickly cemented his place in the team with his death-over expertise and precision yorkers. His Test debut in January 2018 against South Africa marked the start of his red-ball dominance. That same year, he achieved a historic feat as the first Asian bowler to claim five-wicket hauls in South Africa, England, and Australia. He also became the fastest Indian pacer to 100 Test wickets and delivered India’s first-ever Test hat-trick against West Indies in 2019.
Achievements and Style of Play
Bumrah is renowned for his unconventional sling-arm bowling action, making it hard for batsmen to pick his deliveries. His strengths include deadly yorkers, sharp bouncers, and clever slower balls. Calm in high-pressure moments, he’s known for delivering match-winning spells, especially in the death overs. His accolades include the Polly Umrigar Award, multiple selections in ICC Teams of the Year, and the Arjuna Award (2021).
Personal Life and Legacy

In March 2021, Bumrah married Sanjana Ganesan, a sports presenter. Off the field, he enjoys movies, video games, and family time. More than just a pace bowler, Bumrah has redefined India’s fast bowling legacy, excelling across all formats. His impact is evident in India’s historic Test wins overseas and his role as a death overs specialist. Bumrah’s journey from Gujarat’s by-lanes to becoming India’s fast bowling icon continues to inspire the next generation of pacers.
