Early Life and Education

Marion Brooks grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia and also spent her formative years in Portland, Oregon. From a very young age, she had a great love for storytelling and current events. She went to Spelman College in Atlanta, which is where she got her Bachelor of Arts in English. Her academic base, which was very wide, prepared her for a very dynamic and impactful career in journalism.

Career Beginnings and Rise in Journalism

Marion got into the media through a management and advertising program at a Florida-based newspaper. She then went into radio in Atlanta, which gave her experience in a fast-paced newsroom setting. Her talent and dedication took her into television reportage, which she did in many markets, including in Mississippi, Jacksonville, and St. Louis.

In St. Louisville, she received notice for her work, which earned her an Emmy for the 1993 floods. At WSB-TV in Atlanta, she did very well, which also saw her take up the roles of reporter and midday anchor. In 1998, she left for Chicago to join NBC 5 (WMAQ-TV), where she became a familiar face on the weekday newscasts and also a key member of the NBC 5 Investigates team.

At WMAQ in Chicago, Marion Brooks put together a brand of in-depth and very personal journalism. She reported on hard-hitting issues from the front lines of human trafficking to social justice issues. She is into living a balanced life, which she achieves by getting involved in community events, and she is also an advocate for issues that she cares about.
