Colonel Vijayant Thapar is an iconic Indian Army officer whose bravery, patriotism and selflessness were evident during the Kargil War. Early Life & Background

Born 26 December 1976 into a family with an Army background, the young man grew up in a disciplined environment grounded in honour and responsible service to the Nation. Cheerfulness, determination and love for the Nation were key traits of his early character. These influences had a large impact on forming the ambition of becoming an Officer in the Indian Armed Forces (Army).
During this period of time, he also continued to excel academically and eventually pursued a military career based on his desire to serve our Nation by wearing a uniform.
Joining the Indian Army

The Indian Military Academy admitted Vijayant Thapar, and he endured rigorous training, which helped prepare him for being an Army officer. Upon commissioning, he was commissioned as a member of the 2 Rajputana Rifles (one of the elite regiments of the Indian Army) and gained instant recognition and respect from his peers due to his sincere and brave actions, along with his exemplary leadership qualities.
The Kargil War

Vijayant Thapar was assigned to lead his battalion into the Kargil War during 1999 and was at the epicentre of the battle in one of the most significant sectors (Dras). His command and extraordinary bravery during these assaults on strategically critical enemy positions (Knoll and Tololing) contributed to both the recapture of enemy-held positions and an increased morale of his men as they followed him into battle.
After leading his men and continuing to inspire them during battle, Captain Thapar was martyred on June 29th, 1999, at the age of just 22 years old, by paying the ultimate sacrifice for India.
Vir Chakra and Legacy

For his courageous actions during battle, Captain Vijayant Thapar was awarded the Vir Chakra (VrC) posthumously for gallantry in combat. His last letter, written to his family, was known worldwide for its maturity, patriotism, and strength of emotion.
As of 2026, Captain Thapar is still being honoured as a national hero; he is forever remembered as an example of courage, duty, and love for his country.
