After receiving a mixed response during its theatrical run, The Sabarmati Report made its digital debut on ZEE5 on January 10, 2025. Dheeraj Sharma directed a movie about the Godhra train burning incident, which occurred on November 15th, 2024. It tells the heartbreaking story of how 69 people died as a result of this incident. Vikrant Massey, Raashii Khanna, and Riddhi Dogra play some of the lead roles.
The movie intends to depict the way in which various media outlets covered this tragedy. Because of this, viewers are interested in finding similarities between the characters in the movie and real people from that time, especially when it comes to how journalists reported during that era.

The character of Manika Rajpurohit has generated a lot of buzz, specifically because many social media users want to know if her character is based on Barkha Dutt, who was a senior journalist covering the 2002 Gujarat riots. Some online discussions and posts have suggested parallels between the character and real-life media figures.
During a press interaction, Riddhi Dogra was asked directly about this comparison. In reply, she stated that it was more about giving a wider viewpoint rather than talking about individuals. She mentioned that the character portrayed in the movie represented a system in the media and did not represent an actual journalist. Although there were journalists who had actually been present at the location when it happened, it should not be reduced to one person.
Media Representation and Fiction in the Film

Another point of interest that has made many people curious is the fictional news organization that has been portrayed in the movie EBT. Although it has been speculated whether this fictional organization is a representation of some real media house, there is no confirmation about it. This movie, like any other fictional movie based on real events, is a blend of reality and fiction.
Controversy and Reactions of the Public

There have also been controversies associated with this film, with many critics calling it politically motivated. In answer to such criticism, Vikrant Massey asked people to see the film first before criticizing it.
Final Thoughts
The Sabarmati Report attempts to revisit a sensitive chapter in Indian history through a cinematic lens. While it draws inspiration from real events, the characters and storytelling incorporate fictional elements to enhance engagement. The discussions around its authenticity and representation reflect the film’s impact, making it a topic of debate among audiences even after its OTT release.
