Captain Shalini Singh’s story is a study in human resilience and the strong will of Indian women. Her journey, which saw great loss, physical trauma, and social challenge, was also that of a light that burned for all who face what seems insurmountable.

Young Life and the Call of Duty.

Shalini, who is a typical one of many, at 18, while she was in her graduation, she married Major Avinash Singh Bhadauria. But the peace of domestic life was short-lived. In September 2001, Major Avinash, as he was with the 8 Rashtriya Rifles in Doda, Kashmir, put an end to a four-terrorist attack before he fell to gunshot wounds. At the age of 23, Shalini, who was to have been married, found herself a widow with a 2-year-old son, Dhruv.

Instead of withdrawing into her grief, Shalini put out a different story, which was that of her late husband’s service, which she took up. To the disbelief of many who saw her as too delicate, she left her post-graduation studies to prepare for the SSB interview.

From Saris to Army Boots

During the transition from civilian to military life, Shalini had a hard time. At the SSB in Allahabad, she had intense physical and mental stress. She would spend nights in tears missing her young son; by day, she was very focused. Her determination paid off when she passed the selection, which she shared with her family in joyful and reflective tears.

In 2002, at the age of 26, Shalini reported for duty at the Officers’ Training Academy in Chennai. The 6-month intense program, which included a total transformation of the trainees, was what she went through. Also, at that time, she would say that the mental stress of losing her husband was more difficult for her than any physical pain the academy put them through. On September 7, 2002, which was just weeks before the first death anniversary of her husband, Shalini was commissioned as an officer in the Indian Army.

A Career of Honour and Grace

Captain Shalini Singh served the country for five years with honour. In what was a very emotional moment of her career, she went up to the podium in her uniform to receive the Kirti Chakra, which is the second-highest peacetime gallantry award, on behalf of her deceased husband from President APJ Abdul Kalam. At her graduation parade, which was of three years’ duration, her son Dhruv playfully tugged at her epaulettes, which in turn represented the balance she had achieved between being a mother and a soldier.

Overcoming Personal Adversity

Shalini did not see an end to her struggles post-military service. In 2009, she was involved in a very serious car accident in Bikaner, which left her bedridden for a year with 17 broken bones. Medical professionals at the time were sure that she would never walk again. Out of the same strength that took her through the OTA (I assume this is a reference to a previous difficult period in her life), she fought back. Today, she is a marathon runner, which is proof that what the body can’t do due to injury, the mind can overcome.

In which of her personal life’s aspects did a second storm break out when she married again, in a second trial? In which instance, the partner forced her to choose between which of her two men, her husband or son, was of primary importance. Shalini didn’t waver in her choice of supporting which of the two was her child. She rose to the occasion yet again in the face of personal betrayal.

Legacy of Strength

Captain Shalini Singh’s story is a story of rising from the ashes. She broke through the glass ceiling as a single parent in a boys’ world and fought her way out of the deep valleys of physical and emotional trauma. Her story is a living testament that although we may not be able to choose our circumstances, we have full say in our response. She is still a source of inspiration to many as a motivator, an athlete, and a true-life soldier.
