Chantal Compagnon is associated with the notorious figure Charles Sobhraj. With all his criminal activity, Charles made headlines in the special reports detailing his history of committing crimes while also escaping from law enforcement. Chantal had a traditional background before meeting Charles, and how she became involved in crime and escaped from the law is a very compelling/interesting, but also disturbing story.

Chantal Compagnon’s Early Years and Family Life

Chantal was born in Paris in 1945. She lived in a very traditional family as a child. There was much structure and stability in the first few years of her life, completely opposite to the chaotic lifestyle that was to come into play in later years. All those lessons taught to Chantal as a child shaped her values and are part of the reason that she became involved in the various types of crime/illegal activities that she participated in.

Chantal Compagnon first met Charles Sobhraj at a Parisian social function in 1969. Charles, who was an outgoing/coffin, also had/used a great deal of effort to persuade Chantal to come to a party in Paris. He did this by giving her examples of his fabulous life, such as cars, planes, yachts, but really, those stories were all false. At the time, he was already involved with another woman, but quickly shifted his attention toward Chantal.

Despite his arrest for car theft soon after proposing, Chantal chose to stand by him. After his release, the couple married and soon left France for Asia using forged documents. This event marked the start of a hazardous and tumultuous time in her life.

As Chantal travelled to countries like India and Afghanistan, she became more involved in Sobhraj’s criminal schemes. Together they targeted tourists with stealing (theft) and conning (fraud). While they made an attempt at a regular life in Mumbai, Sobhraj shortly returned to his criminal past through smuggling goods and stealing cars.

During this time, Chantal delivered a daughter (Usha) who was sent back to France to be raised by Chantal’s family. The couple continued their nomadic lifestyle of moving around (Kabul to Delhi), usually due to criminal activities or avoiding being arrested.

Chantal and Sobhraj suffered multiple arrests due to their criminal behaviour. One of the most extravagant moments would be Sobhraj’s escape from Tihar Jail, which was allegedly arranged by Chantal; however, Chantal and Sobhraj were eventually separated due to their continuous arrests and the toll their lifestyle took on them as individuals.

Chantal returned to France and made a conscious decision to separate herself from Sobhraj and the dangerous life she had lived.

Although Chantal made the decision to separate from Sobhraj, reports state that the bond she had with her husband never totally disappeared. Years later, she is believed to have re-established contact with him, illustrating the complicated emotional bond they shared.

She also took legal steps following his conviction in Nepal, even appealing to the European Court of Human Rights, criticizing the lack of support from the French government.

Cultural Representation and Legacy

Chantal’s life gained renewed attention through the Netflix series The Serpent, where her character was fictionalized under a different name. While dramatized, the show highlighted the intense and often troubling dynamics of her relationship with Sobhraj.Chantal Compagnon Wiki, Biography, Height, Husband, Children, Family In 2026
