Early Life and Education
Vikram Seth was born in Kolkata in a highly accomplished family of Punjabi descent. His father worked as a senior executive in the shoe industry, while his mother became one of India’s respected judges.
During his childhood, Seth spent time between India and the United Kingdom, which exposed him to different cultures and educational systems from an early age. He studied at St. Xavier’s High School before pursuing higher education at Corpus Christi College. Later, he joined Stanford University to study economics.
Even though he excelled academically, his growing interest in literature slowly moved him away from a conventional corporate or financial career.
The China Journey That Changed His Life
A major turning point in Vikram Seth’s life came in 1980 when he traveled to China for academic research related to economics. During this time, he developed an interest in Chinese poetry and culture.
In place of working only on his thesis, Seth began to write poetry. His first poetry collection was called ‘Mappings’. This wasn’t a commercially successful venture, but it did well critically for his literary prowess.
Seth’s experiences in China inspired his travelogue, From Heaven Lake. In this book, Seth wrote about his journey over land from China back to India. The travelogue was highly praised by critics and made him a literary talent worth watching out for.
The Emergence of a Literary Star
During the 1980s, Seth explored various literary genres. He wrote a rather unconventional piece entitled The Golden Gate. This was a novel that was written completely in verse style. The book was set in the Silicon Valley of California.
But perhaps one of his most acclaimed literary ventures came during the 1990s when he wrote A Suitable Boy. At over 1,300 pages, it became one of the longest novels ever written in English and is widely considered Seth’s masterpiece.
Beyond Writing
Apart from novels and poetry, Vikram Seth has contributed to music, opera, and translation work. He has also spoken openly about social issues and individual freedom. His long-term relationship with French musician Philippe Honore reflected his openness about identity and personal life.
Over the years, Seth has received several prestigious honors, including the Padma Shri and recognition from the British Empire for his contribution to literature.
