Punjabi cinema and music have a very special appeal to us. In my home, we have almost made it a point to fill up weekends with their lively bhangra numbers and touching family stories. Should you step into my living room on a Sunday you will find my family huddled around the TV, into a Punjabi film we are completely immersed. Among the stars who put on a great show in this field, there is one who in particular brings out the fun in all of us — Amninderpal Singh Virk, who the world knows as Ammy Virk. With his distinctive style, very down-to-earth nature, and what is at present huge talent, he went from a local talent to become one of the most famous icons of today’s Punjabi entertainment.
The Spark of Real Talent: Age and Height.
Time passes by when you are engaged in a star’s evolution. Born May 11, 1992, Ammy Virk is at present 34 years of age. We have seen his transformation over the past decade from a new artist to a huge box office draw, which has been a fantastic ride for his fans. At a height of only 5 feet 6 inches (168 cm), he proves that true screen presence isn’t in height, but in charisma. As soon as he appears on screen, his dynamic energy takes over the frame; it is hard to look away.
Roots and Foundation: Born and brought up in.
Ammy’s in the town of Nabha, which is in the Patiala district of Punjab and which is also the setting for his native village of Choudhri Majra. He grew up there at the Government Senior Secondary School in Nabha and went on to attend Punjabi University in Patiala for his higher education. Also of note is that he received a B.Sc. in Biotechnology, which is a very different field from what one may expect in the world of show business.
Behind every successful artist is a main support, which for Ammy was his mother. He has opened up that it was she who saw his talent in voice and encouraged him to go into music. Born into a family of three siblings, which included a brother and a sister, Ammy still very much lives in his root culture despite his large-scale success. His brother, Bhagwant Virk, is also a business partner in his production companies. At present, Ammy is not married and is also very private and down-to-earth with his personal life.
A Musical Phenomenon and Cinematic Triumphs
My cousin introduced me to Ammy’s music in 2012 when he released his first track, “Chandigarh Diyan Kudiyan”, which went viral immediately. But what really did it for us was his 2015 emotional outpouring, “Taara”, which became a classic. That song we had on heavy rotation in the car for months.
Ammy transitioned very well from music to acting. His breakout role as Haakam in the film Angrej (2015) saw him take home the Best Debut Actor award at the PTC Punjabi Film Awards. From that point on, we saw iconic characters from him like that of the mischievous Nikka in the Nikka Zaildar series and the very loyal Shivjit in Qismat. Also, he broke into Bollywood to great success, which is seen in his portrayal of the great cricketer Balwinder Singh Sandhu in Kabir Khan’s 83.
Ammy Virk’s story is that of pure talent that has broken through to success. In every piece, whether it is a soulful tune or a perfect comedy bit, what comes through is his humility and passion.
