Spin bowling is a skillful art that requires precision, control, and mastery over finger and wrist movements. A good spinner must understand the variations in turn and speed while delivering the ball. Developing this skill is a lifelong commitment involving years of hard work. Over the last decade, Afghanistan has emerged as a powerhouse of spin bowling producing quite a few world-class spinners.

The following is a look into the top ten spinners from Afghanistan:

1. Rashid Khan (Right-Arm Leg-Spin)

Rashid Khan is undoubtedly the finest spinner Afghanistan has ever produced. Since making his ODI debut in 2015, he has dominated both international and franchise cricket, claiming 277 wickets across all formats. He became the third-youngest bowler to take a five-wicket haul in ODIs. In a T20I against Ireland in 2019, Rashid became the first bowler to secure a double hat-trick in T20Is. Additionally, he holds the record as the youngest captain in both ODI (19 years, 165 days) and Test cricket (20 years, 350 days).

2. Mohammad Nabi (Right-Arm Off-Break)

Simplicity is of course the hallmark of Mohammad Nabi’s bowling action; however, it is enormously effective. He has shown his worth as a bowler by capturing 213 wickets in 216 international matches; he has the distinction of having the most caught-and-bowled dismissals (7) in T20Is. His best moment came in a T20I against Ireland in Dubai, where he took 4 wickets for only 10 runs.

3. Mujeeb Ur Rahman (right-arm off-break)

Having debuted internationally at the tender age of just 16 in 2017, Mujeeb Ur Rahman is already Afghanistan’s fourth-highest international wicket-taker.. In just 66 matches, he has taken 103 wickets. He holds the record as the youngest bowler to take a five-wicket haul in ODIs, achieving the feat against Zimbabwe in 2018. In his debut match, he registered impressive figures of 4/24 in 10 overs. At just 20 years old, Mujeeb has a long career ahead.

4. Amir Hamza (Slow Left-Arm Orthodox)

Often compared to Daniel Vettori for his bowling action, Amir Hamza is one of Afghanistan’s lesser-known but highly effective spinners. In 67 international matches, he has picked up 86 wickets, with 70 of them coming in white-ball cricket. During a Test match against the West Indies in 2019 in Lucknow, he became the first Afghan bowler to take a five-wicket haul on Test debut. His ODI economy rate of 3.92 runs per over highlights his control and accuracy.

5. Samiullah Shinwari (Right-Arm Leg-Break)

Samiullah Shinwari started his career as a leg-spinner but gradually took on more batting responsibilities. However, he still managed to claim 74 wickets in 148 international matches. His quick run-up and simple action often deceived batters. His best T20I performance came against Kenya in 2013, where he took 5/13, the third-best figures for an Afghan bowler in T20Is.

6. Karim Sadiq (Right-Arm Off-Break)

Primarily a wicket-keeper and opening batter, Karim Sadiq was also a useful off-spinner. His standout bowling performance came in the 2009 ICC World Cup Qualifier against Denmark, where he took 4/27 in eight overs. Though he managed only 20 international wickets, his ability to contain runs made him a valuable asset for his team.

7. Qais Ahmad (Right-Arm Leg-Break)

Qais Ahmad made his international debut in 2019 and has played only a couple of matches, taking four wickets. However, his performances in domestic and franchise cricket have been exceptional. He has 68 wickets in just 12 first-class matches and 27 wickets in 12 U-19 ODIs. His ability to excel in franchise leagues around the world makes him a promising talent.

8. Zahir Khan (Left-Arm Wrist Spin)

Zahir Khan Pakteen may not have a long international career yet, but he has already taken nine wickets in four matches. His potential is evident in Test cricket, where he has claimed seven wickets. His skill set makes him a sought-after spinner in franchise cricket, having represented nine teams across five different leagues.

9. Sharafuddin Ashraf (Slow Left-Arm Orthodox)

Sharafuddin Ashraf is a left-arm spinner known for delivering crucial breakthroughs at key moments. While his wicket tally may not be high, his economy rate in ODIs (4.39) reflects his effectiveness. With 18 wickets in 27 international matches, he has proven his ability to control the game’s tempo.

10. Rahmat Shah (Leg-Break Googly)

Rahmat Shah is primarily a batting all-rounder but occasionally contributes with leg-spin. He has taken 14 ODI wickets, including a five-wicket haul against the UAE in the ACC Premier League 2014. With a strike rate of 6.6 while bowling, he remains an unpredictable option for Afghanistan.

Afghanistan’s emergence as a stronghold for spin bowling is evident from the talent these players possess. Each of these spinners has played a vital role in establishing Afghanistan as a competitive cricketing nation.
