Developing your football skills entails mastering various types of kicks, since each is utilized for a different purpose and execution. Below are the top 7 football kicks that can upgrade your gameplay:
1. Instep Drive (Power Shot)
Instep drive, or power shot, is utilized in delivering long-range shots or passes. It is a kick that uses the laces of your boots to kick the ball with the utmost power. To do this, position your non-kicking foot next to the ball, lean forward, and kick the center of the ball with your laces. This kick produces speed and power, and it is suitable for attacking and shooting.
2. Inside of the Foot (Placement Shot)
This is one of the most precise kicks and is usually employed to deliver controlled passes or goal shots. You can direct the ball to where you want it by using the inside of your foot. In order to use this kick, keep your non-kicking foot near the ball and kick it with the inside of your foot, maintaining a balanced stance and concentrating on accuracy.
3. Outside of the Foot (Curled Shot)
Outside-of-the-foot kick is used mainly for bending the ball around defenders or into the corners of the goal. It’s also frequently employed in free-kick scenarios or to bend the ball away from a goalkeeper. To do this, kick the ball using the outside of your foot, instructing it to follow a curved trajectory. It demands accuracy, timing, and training to master.
4. Volley (Mid-air Kick)
A volley is when you hit the ball in the air before it hits the ground. Use this kick for strong and explosive shots, particularly if the ball crosses the box or is lobbed over attackers. Emphasize timing your jump and striking the ball with laces or instep, but don’t lean too much backward as you strike the ball.
5. Chip Shot
A chip shot is employed when you need to lift the ball above the goalkeeper or defenders, typically when they are off their line. The skill needs a light touch so that the ball goes just high enough to get over the opposition. To chip, use the side of your foot to strike the underside of the ball, with a gentle amount of power to lift it above the opposition.
6. Free Kick
A free kick is either direct or indirect, depending on the case. Players need to master striking the ball with accuracy to curl the ball around a wall or shoot directly onto target. Various methods, including bending the ball using the inside or outside of the foot, can be applied depending on the angle and range from the goal.
7. Backheel
The backheel is a deceptive play that you execute to pass to a teammate in front of, or behind you, or suddenly change direction in the ball. It’s where you kick with the heel back while you still keep moving in the direction that you’re already heading. This one’s quite hard to control but very valuable when played closely or when bluffing your rivals.
It’s mastering the various forms of kicks that not only improves your technical skills but also versatility to your game. As you learn with practice when and how to utilize each of them, you will become a better and smart footballer.
