Examinations are put forth as measures of what you know, but some do not even touch that which is presented in a textbook. Some ask for years of preparation, extraordinary concentration, critical thinking ability, and the skill to perform under extreme pressure. In 2026, we see the same few tests which have huge fields of competition and which have very tough selection processes.
For Indian students, the terms JEE Advanced and UPSC are very familiar due to the intensive preparation around them. But the global picture becomes more interesting when we look at the exams from China, the U.S., the U.K. and the professional world.
- Gaokao – China
China has the Gaokao, which is the most rigorous of the world’s university entrance exams. It is the main factor in determining which university a student will attend. The exam includes subjects like Chinese, math, a foreign language, and also other subjects which are based on the student’s field of interest and which province they are from. Also, with the large number of test takers and high academic pressure, it is very competitive.
- JEE Advanced – India
For engineering students, JEE Advanced is the preeminent academic challenge. It serves as the entrance to B Tech programs at IITs. Questions put forth are of a theoretical nature, which focus in depth on Physics, Chemistry and Math rather than simple memorisation. Subjects range from history and geography to governance, economics, ethics, and current affairs. For many Indian graduates, preparing for UPSC is a long-term engagement instead of a one-time exam.
- CFA – Chartered Financial Analyst
The CFA program is for professionals who are pursuing careers in investment and finance. It has three levels which cover areas like financial analysis, portfolio management, ethics and investment decision making. Passing out at each level is a step, but the journey is to do well in the full program.
- USMLE – United States Medical Licensing Examination
The USMLE is a multi-step assessment of medical knowledge and clinical decision-making. Also, it is very demanding as it requires that candidates demonstrate they are able to apply medical principles in real-world clinical settings instead of just repeating info.
- All Souls Prize Fellowship Examination – UK
At Oxford’s All Souls College, this exam is known for its very high bar. It looks at intellectual skill, critical thinking, essay writing, and range of knowledge. The competition is tough in scale but very exclusive.
- CCIE – Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert
In the world of networking, the CCIE is the primary certification of choice. Also, it includes a practical lab component that puts forward the issue of complex network issues within a short time frame.
- Master Sommelier Diploma Examination
The Master Sommelier Diploma Exam is of a different calibre from what you would expect of a traditional academic test. We see in it a high degree of advanced knowledge of wine, tasting ability and professional service skills which candidates must display. For students who are going abroad for higher education, preparing for the GRE is a great challenge, which includes reasoning and also time management.
Final Thoughts
What is great about these exams is that they are for different reasons. Some of them have millions of candidates who participate, and others require years of professional preparation or very specific skills. From personal experience in competitive academic settings, I have found that the hardest part of any large-scale exam is not that there are hard questions; it is sustaining performance over months, if not years.
In many cases, in these exams we see that success is a very different animal. Discipline, patience, strategy, and the ability to stay calm under pressure play a greater role than does intelligence alone.
