Lunch and Tea Breaks in Test Cricket
A normal day of Test cricket would consist of two breaks, scheduled for lunch and tea, and spread over three playing sessions. This is because the day lasts for approximately seven hours. Therefore, the format is designed to require breaks for players every two-hour session so as to be able to cope with fatigue in a better manner.
The durations of these breaks vary, with lunch being longer than tea. Players take a breather after every session so that they can refresh and renew their battle in the field on resuming.

Duration of Lunch and Tea Breaks in Test Cricket
The duration for the lunch break in a Test match is 40 minutes while the tea break is shorter: it is only 20 minutes long. Below is presented a typical schedule for a Test match that begins at 9:30 AM, similar to the ongoing India versus England series.
Standard Test Match Timetable (9:30 AM Start)
Start Time – 09:30 AM
First Session (Morning Session) – 09:30 AM to 11:30 AM
Lunch Break – 11:30 AM to 12:10 PM
Second Session (Afternoon Session) – 12:10 PM to 02:10 PM
Tea Break – 02:10 PM to 02:30 PM
Third Session (Evening Session) – 02:30 PM to 04:30 PM
Extra Time (if 90 overs are not completed) – 04:30 PM to 05:00 PM
It is important to note that these timings are flexible and may be adjusted due to rain delays, innings breaks, or other interruptions.
Lunch can be taken at an early hour or a tea break can be taken.
Rain delays and other breaks occasionally lead to an early lunch or tea break so that these do not continue as breaks after the first few overs of play. It helps minimize the wastage of game time further.

Lunch and Tea Breaks in a Day-Night Test Match
The break schedule is very different in day-night Test matches. There is no lunch break, as these matches commence later in the day, and therefore, for players, it is a dinner break. The tea break remains unchanged.
