Acting Career
Breakthrough with “Never Have I Ever”
Maitreyi made her professional acting debut in 2020 as Devi Vishwakumar, the lead character in Netflix’s teen comedy-drama Never Have I Ever. She got the part after stringent selection from about 15,000 candidates in an open casting call held by Mindy Kaling.

Her audition tape at a local library was done with her mother’s camera. After several rounds of testing, her seventh and final screen tests booked her a ticket to Los Angeles, leading to her being cast in the series when she was only 17 years old.

The show, which was loosely based on Mindy Kaling’s teenage life, became very popular with audiences and ran for four seasons until June 2023. Maitreyi was acclaimed for her performance, for which she got nominated for an Independent Spirit Award, a Canadian Screen Award, an MTV Movie & TV Award, and two People’s Choice Awards. In 2020, Variety praised her acting as a “breakout performance”, and Netflix reported that 40 million households worldwide had streamed the series.
