Suresh Raina, from Muradnagar, Uttar Pradesh, was born on November 27, 1986. He is a former Indian cricketer best known for his aggressive left-handed batting, dynamic fielding skills, and occasional off-spin bowling. An important member of the middle order in India, Raina became the first Indian cricketer to score centuries in all three formats of international cricket. Raina was a very important part of India’s memorable historic victories, besides being a dependable leader as the occasional captain of the national team.


Early Life and Cricketing Journey
Raina hails from a Kashmiri Pandit family that migrated from Jammu and Kashmir to Uttar Pradesh. He trained at Guru Gobind Singh Sports College, Lucknow, where he honed his skills and prepared for professional cricket. His exceptional performances at the youth level earned him a place in India’s U-19 team, and in 2003, he made his domestic debut for Uttar Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy.

His debut national call came in 2005, when he was selected for the Indian national team. It was limited overs cricket, however, in which he truly thrived and managed to be one of the most dependable middle-order Indian batsmen.


Career and National Achievements
Raina was part of India’s squad in many ICC tournaments, with one of his significant contributions coming in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. Although he didn’t always start, Raina made a significant contribution in the knockouts, scoring important runs against Australia in the quarterfinal and against Pakistan in the semifinal, which saw India being crowned the champion.

He was also a member of the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy team and made notable contributions in multiple bilateral series and ICC tournaments. While he performed really well in ODIs and T20s, his Test career was not too consistent because he struggled with short-pitched bowling. Still, he became one of the most prized possessions for India in white-ball cricket.


IPL Career and Legacy
Raina had a glorified career in the Indian Premier LeagueHe was the very fulcrum of the Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) wheel with the franchise winning a couple of IPL titles, whereupon he became the first cricketer ever to have truly hit a 5000-run mark in the IPL while setting the record for the maximum catches taken in the IPL. His extraordinary consistency gave him the title of Mr.IPL.

In 2016 and 2017 during CSK’s absence from the IPL, he captained Gujarat Lions and proved his worth as a leader. He returned to CSK in 2018 and led them to another IPL title.

Retired and Similarly Post Cricket Activities
Raina announced his retirement from international cricket on August 15, 2020, like MS Dhoni. Later, he went out of IPL in 2021 and started doing cricket commentary.

Beyond cricket, Raina has pursued entrepreneurial ventures.Inaugurated in 2023, the Indian restaurant in Amsterdam serves the authentic Indian cuisine to a global audience. It was in 2022, when he received his honorary doctorate from Vels University for his contribution to Indian sports.


Personal Life and Legacy
Raina is married to Priyanka Chaudhary and they have two children together. Apart from sports, Raina is involved in various charitable activities, helping make education accessible and promote sports for young underprivileged children.
