Dr. GVS Pavan Datta was hailing from Tirupati, who secured the 22nd rank in the 2022 UPSC Civil Services Examination. He achieved this major feat during his first attempt and without formal coaching, only relying on self-preparation. His success story is inspirational in that it is not only about acquiring fruitful education but also public service dedication that has motivated many in his community.

Dr. Datta was born into a family where education was a great asset. The key figure who brought him this far was his mother, Lalitha Kumari, who taught him physical sciences. His father, who is also with the LIC, was instrumental in inculcating the value of education into him early in life. Even at that age, Dr. Datta had this habit of studying and completed his school schooling in Gudivada and continued with pre-university schooling at Narayana Jr. College in Hyderabad.

His thirst for learning and serving the community led him to pursue a medical degree from Sri Venkateswara Medical College, Tirupati, coming out of the Andhra Pradesh EAMCET admitting him at the 60th place. Though he has a medical background, he ventured into the competitive world of UPSC because he wanted to serve the nation in governance and public service.

Preparation for Dr. Datta consisted of independent study coupled with intensive reading and mock interviews for UPSC. He also used resources such as books and online materials and mock tests to consolidate his understanding of the syllabus. For the personality test, he took mock interviews at Balalatha Madam’s Institute, Hyderabad, to develop his skills to handle interview situations. He attributes his success to his balancing time between MBBS studies and that of preparing for UPSC.

Dr. Datta came across a lot of inspiration in the success stories of civil servants who really did a lot for the nation. He was encouraged by the example of public work itself and lit a fire in him to strive through tough times. These real-life examples further made him understand the value of public service, which led to strengthening his commitment towards becoming an IAS officer.

Dr. Datta’s academic achievements were supplemented by the determination and support of a benefactor from his immediate environment. Especially, among his parents, mother as an educator in herself instilled in him a strong desire for knowledge with self discipline. The encouragement and an unshakeable belief of the entire family contributed fundamentally to his success.

Dr. Datta’s journey to becoming an IAS officer is the best example of what self-motivation and dedication can do in a person’s life. His first attempt at the UPSC has proved to underscore the work, sound planning and support systems that have gone into making it a success without relying on a coaching centre. He symbolizes resilience for many aspirants wishing to crack the UPSC exam without assistance.
