Varun Raymond Aaron was born in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, on October 29, 1989. He is one of the very few Indian fast bowlers to bowl consistently above 150 kmph. Injuries held him back throughout his career, but the sheer pace and determination gave him a place in Indian cricket.
Early Life and Entry into Cricketing Activities

In the middle of his teens, Aaron found his calling for fast bowling. Following his initiative of pace bowling, a path that only a few in India have ventured into, his major influence was West Indies pace legend Andy Roberts. When he was 15 years of age, the MRF Pace Foundation, which is known to have churned out Indian fast bowlers, gave his career a definite direction.
He played for Jharkhand Under-19 and was later part of the India Under-19 and East Zone teams. His early exposure to competitive cricket laid the groundwork for his future in domestic and international cricket.
Domestic Career

Varun made his first-class debut for Jharkhand in the 2008-09 season. He rose through the ranks quickly and was picked for India’s emerging players squad that toured Australia. In the 2010-11 Ranji Trophy, he claimed 13 wickets and bowled at a blistering 153.4 km/h.
His county stint with Durham in 2014 under Paul Collingwood added international experience to his domestic resume. He also represented India B in the Deodhar Trophy and India Red in the Duleep Trophy.
International Debut and Setbacks
Aaron made his ODI debut against England in October 2011 and picked 3 wickets for 24 runs. He followed it with a Test debut against West Indies the next month. However, a string of injuries, including stress fractures in his back, derailed his progress. After a brief absence, he made a comeback in 2014 during the tour of New Zealand but couldn’t establish a consistent spot in the national team.
IPL Journey

Varun Aaron has been part of several IPL franchises. He started with Kolkata Knight Riders (2008–2010) but didn’t get a game. Delhi Daredevils picked him in 2011, and he remained with them till 2013. His most prominent stint came with Royal Challengers Bangalore from 2014 to 2017. Rajasthan Royals signed him in 2019, and he also played for Kings XI Punjab.
Despite showing glimpses of brilliance, injuries and form issues often kept him on the bench. In IPL 2021, he went unsold despite a base price of ₹50 lakh.
Personal Life

Varun Aaron is married to his childhood sweetheart, Ragini Singh, since 2016. A music enthusiast off the field, Aaron is known for his aggressive approach on it.
Retirement and Legacy
Aaron officially retired from all representative formats on January 10, 2025. While injuries limited his international appearances, Aaron will be remembered as one of India’s fastest bowlers, someone who dared to bowl quick in an era of swing and seam.
