Early Life and Background
Madhusudan Rao, the Odia literature legend, was born in 1853 in Puri, Odisha. He belonged to a good Brahmin family and was significantly impacted by the literary and cultural backdrop of the time. He had his initial education in Puri and continued with higher studies in Kolkata, where he got exposure to new ideas and movements in literature.
Contribution to Odia Literature
Madhusudan Rao is considered one of the father figures of modern Odia poetry. He was instrumental in turning the Odia poetic forms into modern lyrical forms. He was one of the earliest poets to venture into romanticism and brought a new wave of imagination, emotion, and simplicity into Odia literature.
His poetry was characterized by its musicality, richness of emotion, and nationalism. In his work, he emphasized social reform, patriotism, and values. His popular poem Kāḷijai remains a literary classic that captures the essence of Odisha’s culture and belief.
Literary Works
Madhusudan Rao wrote a number of collections of poems, children’s books, essays, and translations. His poetry collection Chhandamala (Garland of Verses) is perhaps the first effort to set Odia poetry of modern times on solid foundations. He translated English poems and prose into Odia as well, thereby creating new paradigms of literature for Odia-speaking people.
His children’s writings were path-breaking and played an important role in the growth of children’s literature in Odisha. His books usually had moral tales, patriotic content, and easy language that appealed to children.
Legacy and Influence

Madhusudan Rao is honored as the “Kabi Samrat” (Emperor of Poets) of Odisha. His unwavering dedication to the advancement of Odia language and literature has secured him a lasting place in the annals of Indian literary history. Not only did he encourage generations of Odia poets to tread the path, but he also paved the way for modern literary trends in the state.
He died in 1912, but his work continues to be read and savored in Odisha. His life and literature continue to be the envy of and source of inspiration for admirers of Odia heritage and culture.
