Parasparam is a hit Malayalam TV series that has set a new standard in the portrayal of women on air. For over 5 years, the show ran, which also saw it finish more that 1500 episodes which makes it the longest running daily soap in Malayalam TV. Also a favorite in the home for is it’s intense story line, complex characters and mix of the traditional with the progressive.

Overview

In the plot, we see Deepthi, a bold and smart woman who aspires to join the IPS. In a traditional home, which looks for the woman is expected to be at home as a housewife does she falls into but instead, she sets out to pursue her dream. Her husband, Sooraj, supports her totally and together they, in turn, break out of social norms. The story also looks at their emotional journey, family issues and how Deepthi grows from being a daughter-in-law to a respected police officer.

Main Cast

Gayathri Arun as Deepthi: Gayathri played out the lead role of Deepthi IPS which was of a very brave and honest woman. Her performance was powerful which in turn inspired many viewers and brought to life a character which broke gender barriers.

Vivek Gopan as Sooraj: Sooraj put in the work to be the ideal husband, he was also the rock his wife could count on. His character which stood out was that of one who put his wife’s dreams first which went against what was expected of men at the time.

Rekha Ratheesh as Padmavathi: As the family leader her character was of a traditional and authoritative nature which at times put her at odds with Deepthi’s ambitions thus adding emotional tension to the narrative.

Sneha Divakaran as Meenakshi: Known for her schemes and jealous ways, Meenakshi brought just the right amount of drama and conflict to the story.

Kottayam Pradeep as Krishnan: His role as a father-in-law brought perspective and experience to the family.

Shobi Thilakan as SI Dhanapalan: The main character who appeared in the police station scenes, his role added to the show’s law enforcement story credibility.

The serial included a large cast of supporting characters which brought depth to the story and which represented a range of human emotion and social behavior.

Crew

Behind the success of Parasparam was a team of very talented and dedicated creators. We had sharp and consistent direction which in turn made for very engaging storytelling which lasted the course of the serial’s run. Also the concept and screen play were very much social relevant which in turn allowed viewers to connect with the characters on a deep level.

Cinematography had a warm and real touch to every frame, which in turn made for a smooth narrative flow. The costume and makeup teams did very well at portraying the culture of the characters. Background scores, which we see in the series, added to the emotion in some scenes and also built up the suspense in others. They did a great job of keeping the series’ intensity. Set design and sound effects were executed with care, which made each scene very realistic.

Parasparam left an enduring legacy in Malayalam television by which they infused progressive issues with traditional elements. Their success was out of which came great performances from the stars and dedicated work from the behind the scenes team which saw to it that each story was a quality production.
