Kolangal was one of the most popular Tamil television soap operas that was initially shown on Sun TV from 2003 to 2009.

By the time it aired more than 1,500 episodes, this was one of the longest-lasting Tamil serials indeed.

The storyline presented Abinaya, a creative and determined woman portrayed by Devayani, who fights for her rights all the time and is never afraid to set things right in the family, society, and within herself.

The situation covering the core of the series can be best illustrated with her fight for her dignity which was in some places a heartbeat away from tearful or smiley (in a positive way) moments.

That the character was greatly appreciated by the public, especially women, is a point hard to argue, and the performance of Devayani was outstanding.

The cast features were Deepa Venkat, Ajay Kapoor, Poornima Indrajith, and several other veteran actors who contributed to the series’ tangled story. The series was characterized by the presence of the most pressing social issues, such as roles of men and women in society, family relationships, job politics and moral issues, which, in the beginning, were almost absent in mainstream Tamil serials.

Musically, the title song of the series was very successful; it was composed by D. Imman and sung by Harini. Also, the crew of the TV Drama was able to catch up with the latest technology in terms of its
technical aspect and thus they could present a livestreaming look and film multiple scenes in one place.

Its return to the screens on Colors Tamil in 2022 was indeed proof that Kolangal still has its audience somehow. The show had already achieved its popularity not only in India but also in Sri Lanka and the UK thanks to the local Tamil channels and is currently available online through
Vikatan’s YouTube channel. The soap opera managed to leave a lasting memory in the Indian television history as one of the benchmarks for the daily soap genre.
