This opened the eyes of the masses to the intricacies of the world of Westeros—a land divided by powerful aristocratic households jostling for power, prestige, and survival.

The story begins with the Stark household in the North, led by Eddard “Ned” Stark, who is played by Sean Bean. His long-time friend, King Robert Baratheon, played by Mark Addy, requests that he serve as the Hand of the King. This sets off a chain of events revealing secrets, triggering betrayals, and igniting clashes that span kingdoms.

Michelle Fairley plays Catelyn Stark, Ned’s devoted wife, as their children Robb (Richard Madden), Sansa (Sophie Turner), Arya (Maisie Williams), Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright), and the bastard Jon Snow (Kit Harington)—follow their respective dramatic arcs.

Lena Headey is Queen Cersei Lannister in King’s Landing, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is her twin brother Jaime. Peter Dinklage delivers an outstanding performance as Tyrion Lannister, the brilliant
and quick-smart youngest son. Aidan Gillen is the clever Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish, and Conleth Hill brings intrigue as mysterious spymaster Varys.

Across the Narrow Sea, Emilia Clarke plays Daenerys Targaryen, an exiled princess who wants to reclaim her family’s throne. She is accompanied by her loyal knight Ser Jorah Mormont, played by Iain Glen, and tormented by her brother Viserys, played by Harry Lloyd.

David Benioff and D. B. Weiss were the showrunners and primary writers. The series’ world-building, character complexity, and the political plot greatly influenced people, and very quickly the course was set for what would be one of the greatest TV hits of the 2010s.

The brand new events of this season that include Ned Stark’s unforgettable execution and the birth of dragons are the dramatic twists which alter the story forever and the stakes for all the ‘players’ of
the game of thrones are raised to a whole new level.
