Vishnuvardhan’s birth name was Sampath Kumar and he was born on 18 September 1950 in Mysore, Karnataka. He grew up in a cultured and artistic Brahmin family, with influences in the family from a young age, which contributed to his early passion for cinema. His father was H. L. Narayana Rao, a writer and musician; Kamakshamma, a devout homemaker committed to family traditions.
He enjoyed a disciplined, artistic environment from a young age, so living in Mysore appealed to him and he enjoyed school and graduated from college in Mysore and Bangalore, where he engaged in dramatics and cultural activities.
An Ascent to Stardom
Vishnuvardhan began his professional acting caree with the Kannada film Vamsha Vriksha. His second film Naagarahaavu in 1972 showcased his commanding screen presence, his deep voice, and his acting range and before long, Vishnuvardhan became a household name. He starred in more than 220 films across a range of languages all of which contributed to him becoming a major player in the Kannada film industry.

Referred to as Sahasa Simha (The Brave Lion), Vishnuvardhan achieved success in a range of genres including romance, action, and drama. Some notable films in his career include Bandhana, Suprabhatha, Hombisilu, and Yajamana.
