
Why chip design is having a moment in India
Ask any ECE student a few years ago about VLSI and you’d get a shrug. Now it’s one of the first things they mention. The India Semiconductor Mission, new fab and packaging projects, and design-linked incentives have pushed the industry into the spotlight. Intel, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, AMD and Texas Instruments already employ thousands of engineers in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Noida, and a handful of Indian startups are now building their own chips.
Roles you can aim for
Most people start in one of these areas:
- RTL design: writing Verilog or SystemVerilog that describes how a chip behaves.
- Verification: hunting for bugs in a design before it goes to manufacturing, usually with UVM. This is where most of the jobs are.
- Physical design: placing blocks, routing wires and getting timing to work.
- DFT (design for test): adding features so finished chips can be tested.
- Analog and mixed-signal: ADCs, PLLs, power management circuits. Fewer openings, but hard to replace.
- FPGA and embedded: prototyping and validating hardware and software together.
Skills that actually get you hired
Interviewers keep coming back to the basics: digital logic, CMOS fundamentals and computer architecture. On top of that, you need Verilog or SystemVerilog, some scripting in Python, Perl or TCL, and hands-on time with tools from Synopsys, Cadence or Siemens EDA. Knowing a little about RISC-V or AI accelerators helps too.
The softer side gets underrated. Debugging a failing testbench at 11 pm takes patience, and you’ll spend plenty of time explaining problems to teammates in other groups.
What the pay looks like
These are rough ranges and vary a lot by company:
- Freshers: ₹6-15 LPA, with product companies at the upper end
- 2-5 years: ₹12-25 LPA
- 5-10 years: ₹25-45 LPA
- Senior and architect roles: ₹50 LPA and above
Engineers who are strong in physical design or verification, and who know their tools well, usually get the best offers.
Where it’s heading
Demand should stay strong for a few reasons. AI and edge devices need custom silicon. Electric and autonomous vehicles are packed with complex chips. RISC-V is lowering the barrier for startups. Government support for fabs and skilling is growing, and global companies keep moving design work to India because the talent is here.
Getting started
Most people come in through a B.Tech or M.Tech in ECE or EEE. Whatever your degree, build things. Buy an FPGA board, write Verilog until it feels natural, and put your RTL and verification projects on GitHub. A small internship or a good training course can help you get past the first screening.
Final word
VLSI isn’t a quick path. The learning curve is steep and the tools are complicated. But the pay is good, the work is technical, and the industry is only growing here. If you’re willing to put in the effort, 2026 is a good year to start.
