Balu Gani Talkies is a thriller in Telugu directed by Vishwanath Prathap, which opened at cinemas on October 4, 2024. The movie is set in a countryside village and it revolves around Balu (Shiva Kumar Ramachandravarapu), a theater operator who screens adult films as an aid to keep his failing cinema enterprise alive. Everything goes well in his life until a man collapses and dies during one of his screenings, dragging Balu into an inescapable pitfall of events where his life is at risk.

It sets up at an easy-going pace that may test the patience of certain audiences. The main enigma slowly gets revealed, and the story picks speed and gradually pulls in the suspenseful narration. The narrative gathers pace convincingly, and the climax offers a shocking and audacious climax that stands out.

In the lead role, Shiva Kumar Ramachandravarapu is very good as he plays the role of Balu quite convincingly and with enough depth in it. The transition of the character from a quirky villager to an unwilling hero is done pretty maturely. Saranya Sharma lends her emotional heft to the narration through her brief presence, while Raghu Kunche makes his presence felt as a villain magnifying the suspense in the narrative.
From a technical viewpoint, the film was made raw as well as realistic to suit the rustic backdrop. The first few portions, however, have some minor technical glitches regarding the sound design and basic visuals, which doesn’t reduce its overall experience. Aditya B.N.’s music and the cinematography from Balu Sandilyasa are spellbinding to create a raw engaging atmosphere.

In the end, Balu Gani Talkies stands for a surprisingly smart rural thriller. While it stumbles somewhat in the first few scenes, the film guarantees an attractive story, stellar performances, and an unexpectedly satisfying ending for those willing to wait. It is a new addition to the thriller genre proving that intelligence and regional characteristics can coexist.
