The traditional clothing of Mizo men is simple and plain, but elegant, embodying their close relationship with nature and tribalism. The ‘Puanzu’ is one of the most common pieces of clothing worn by men, a hand-woven cloth that is generally black and white. It is a multipurpose shawl-like piece of clothing that men wear over their shoulders or wrap around their bodies. On festival occasions such as Chapchar Kut or Mim Kut, men can be seen in Puanzu’s in bright colours that include various stripes of red, green, and yellow.

During formal or ceremonial occasions, men will wear a white, collared shirt, with a finely woven black or dark jacket. The jacket may also be accompanied by a turban-like headgear from the same woven piece of cloth and signifies honour and respect. A Mizo man often adds a hand-woven necklace or strands of beads to further enhance their traditional dress.

Traditional Dress of Mizo Women

Mizo women’s traditional dress is colourful and ornamental. One of the more popular types of garments is the ‘Puan’, which is a beautiful wraparound skirt made of cotton or wool. The Puan has multiple designs and varieties with striped patterns or geometric designs, each having a cultural meaning, and each is related to a certain ethnicity or occasion.
An example of the variety of Puan is the ‘Puanchei’ (festive Puan), which is the Puan seen in dances and festivities. It is made with red and white stripes, has ornamentation and is one of the best-loved garments associated with Mizo women’s clothing.

The puan is also worn with a ‘Kawrechi’ top, which can match or coordinate. Typically, the Kawrechi will be white with embroidered designs on the sleeves and necklines in colour. For the traditional dances like Cheraw (bamboo dance), the Mizo women will wear coordinating outfits with floral headbands and other jewellery embellishments to add elegant beauty.

Significance and Craftsmanship

The traditional attire of Mizoram is not only a symbol of identity but also a representation of the weaving skills passed down through generations. Most of these garments are handwoven by local women using traditional looms, and the process can take several days to complete. The motifs, colour combinations, and materials used often reflect tribal beliefs, folklore, and the natural surroundings of Mizoram.

In recent years, designers have started incorporating Puan fabrics into modern silhouettes, making them more accessible and fashionable to the younger generation. This blend of tradition and modernity helps preserve Mizo heritage while keeping it relevant.

Conclusion

The traditional dress of Mizoram is a beautiful expression of its cultural richness and pride. Whether it is the dignified Puanzu worn by men or the colourful Puanchei draped gracefully by women, these garments continue to tell stories of tradition, craftsmanship, and unity. The people of Mizoram wear their heritage not just as clothing, but as a symbol of identity, history, and enduring pride.
