Madhuri was a star who ruled the 1990s. Known for her expressive features, great dance skills, and success in commercial as well as critical circles, she starred in hits like Dil (1990), Beta (1992), Hum Aapke Hain Koun! (1994) and Dil To Pagal Hai (1997). Her charm, energy, and consistency set the bar for female leads that decade.

  1. Sridevi

Already in the 1980s, Sridevi was a star who brought to Bollywood in the 1990s her comic timing, dramatic intensity and innate charisma. In films like Chandni, Khuda Gawah, Lamhe, Gumrah and Judaai, it was seen that she did romance, action, comedy and tragedy with equal ease. Her presence improved many a film which may have gone flat otherwise.

  1. Juhi Chawla

Juhi brought out a great blend of romance, comedy and youth in her films. From her breakthrough in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, which was a hit, she went on to star in what were also successful films of mine, like Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke, Darr, Yes Boss, Ram Jaane, and Ishq. Also, what is very notable is that she was a natural at delivering dialogue and bringing warmth to her characters.

In the mid-90s, Kajol came into the picture. With her fiery and no frills attitude and great acting skills, she won many hearts. In films like Baazigar, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Gupt and Dushman, she proved to be a sure bet. She did romance and thrill — never played the typecast role.

Raveena’s great charm and talent for mass entertainment made her a star in blockbusters. She had a strong debut and went on to feature in big commercial films like Mohra, Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi, Ziddi, Dulhe Raja, and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. Her image transformed between that of a heroine and an item number girl, and also that of a dramatic actress, which she pulled off very well.

  1. Urmila Matondkar

Originally a child actor, Urmila’s breakout in the 90s was incredible. In that decade, she stood out in experimental roles, which she handled very well, in particular in Rangeela (1995), which saw her do great work in terms of performance and dance. Also in offbeat or grimmer films like Satya (1998), which is a crime drama, she did very well, which shows that she went beyond the typical romantic or glamorous roles.

  1. Shilpa Shetty

Shilpa had a unique blend of style, physical fitness, and screen presence, which is hard to come by in others. She broke in with Baazigar and went on to star in a wide range of films from mainstream glamour to more in-your-face serious plot lines. In Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Jaanwar, Dhadkan and many more, she left her mark in roles that required a lot of attitude and assertiveness.

  1. Meenakshi Seshadri

By the start of the 1990s, Meenakshi was well established in the industry, and she sustained that success through a wide range of characters. She did emotionally intense films (Damini), which also had action and drama (Ghayal, Ghatak) elements and also romance. What made her stand out was her ability to play suffering, hope, rebellion and elegance which no one else did.

Legacy

In today’s cinema, we see the legacy of the 1990s Bollywood actresses alive and well. They still put out films that are watched and quoted, which are remade. We see their performances as a study. Many of them have stayed relevant through the choice of their roles, by returning to the screen, or by being the stars of retrospectives. What they did laid the groundwork for the next generation of actress which now enjoys even wider roles and recognition.

In the 90s, we saw not only great music and big box office hits but also an era that saw actress becoming icons that balanced artistry, appeal and agency, which in turn went beyond their time.
