Kalinga was an old and powerful area of the eastern side of South Asia. It was located almost totally in today’s Odisha state and partly in northern Andhra Pradesh. Its character is very much in the early Indian way, as the Kalinga’s identity came up in epic literature. These stories even indicate that Kalinga had a vigorous character and a political presence long before the formal historical records, thus being one of the oldest known cultural regions of the subcontinent.
In Early History, Kalinga

By the time of the fourth century BCE, Kalinga had become a notable political player. It was defeated by emperors coming from the north, but it still managed to keep its autonomy. The Kalinga War was one of the most pivotal events in Kalinga’s history, as the whole region was destroyed and people suffered a lot. The conqueror’s power was greatly affected by this event politically and morally, and Kalinga became a prominent symbol of resistance and sacrifice in Indian history.
The Mahameghavahana Dynasty

Kalinga became independent once again by the end of the first millennium CE under the rule of the Mahameghavahana dynasty in the second century BCE. The most famous ruler of this house was Kharavela, who made Kalinga a great military and cultural power. His time was filled with victorious wars all over India, construction of roads and buildings, and heavy support for Jainism. At the time, Kalinga was politically powerful and culturally influential.
Fragmentation and Regional States

The decline of the Mahameghavahanas left Kalinga disintegrated into a plethora of smaller kingdoms and local rulers. Amongst these, Utkala was the one that gained much prominence, and later on, it was the one that significantly contributed to the establishment of the regional identity of Orissa. Even though the political unity was no longer there, the cultural traditions of the region still continued to be vibrant, thus creating a constant flow of language, religion, and art.
The Eastern Ganga Dynasty
The fifth century CE is often marked by the ascendancy of the Eastern Ganga dynasty as the most powerful group in the area. Their reign lasted for several hundred years and brought an end to the political turmoil in the region for a long time. The Gangas are noted for their incredible administration as well as the creation of huge temples, which, in a way, reflected the greatness of both religion and kings. Their time made Orissa a major cultural hotspot in eastern India.
The Gajapati Empire and Later Period
By the end of the medieval period, the Gajapati emperors had succeeded in unifying a vast part of eastern India and, as a consequence, the area of Orissa became much more influential than before. After their fall, the area slowly got dominated by outside powers, and thus, independent rule came to an end. Yet, through all these changes, the influence of Kalinga and Orissa on the region’s cultural and historical identity has always been and still is very strong.
