Captain Shubham Gupta SM is known in the Indian Armed Forces for his bravery, leadership and dedication to his duty. He is also known throughout the country for making the ultimate sacrifice during a counter-terrorism operation in the conduct of operations in the Security Forces operational theatre in Jammu & Kashmir by being killed on duty. Because of his conduct during his operations, he gained huge admiration from his fellow service personnel as well as from the civilian population.
Early Life and Background
Shubham Gupta was born into a disciplined, educated and service-oriented family in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. From an early age, he displayed determination, sincerity and love for his country. After completing his 10+2 in Agra, he sought out other colleges before eventually joining the Indian Army to serve and to wear his country’s uniform with the hope of showing his commitment and responsibility to his country.
Joining the Indian Army
After a successful selection process, he joined the Indian Army. Upon completion of his formal military training, he was commissioned as an Officer in the Indian Army. His professionalism, courage and leadership abilities earned him both respect and admiration from his Superiors as well as from his peers, and his desire to lead from the front and instil high morale into his Subordinates.
Military Service and Bravery
Captain Shubham Gupta was involved in an operational environment that was difficult to operate in and completed many field assignments that were highly significant. In his role as a leader, he demonstrated an exceptional amount of courage when executing operational plans against terrorist operations in Jammu and Kashmir. During one specific encounter where he led an attack against heavily armed terrorists, Captain Gupta demonstrated an extraordinary amount of bravery, courage, selflessness and commitment to the success of the mission he was given.
During the course of his actions while leading his men into battle against the terrorists, Captain Gupta unfortunately received fatal wounds and was killed in action. He is considered to be a prime example of the finest standards of professionalism found in officers and soldiers of the Indian Army, as he placed his duty to his nation and duty to his men above his own welfare.
Sena Medal and Recognition
As a result of Captain Shubham Gupta’s bravery and sacrifice, he was awarded the Sena Medal (S.M.) for gallantry, which was awarded posthumously by the Chief of Army Staff, General Manoj Mukund Naravane, and recognised his extraordinary actions under the extreme and life-threatening circumstances associated with the Captain’s sacrifice. Captain Shubham Gupta is viewed as a hero of India and will be remembered with great respect by those in the Indian military who are also heroes.

Captain Shubham Gupta is still considered by many to represent patriotism, courage, and self-sacrifice in 2026. He is a role model for many young Indians, particularly the youth with aspirations to work within our military force. He has demonstrated tremendous courage through his actions and will be eternally remembered for his valour, which embodies the true essence of the Indian Army.
