In India, there is a place that always stops me from going through my travel photos, and that is Kerala. As a travel enthusiast who also has a thing for the beach, Kerala has been on my must-go list.

From calm backwaters and dense tea gardens to colourful festivals and great food, there is a magic that this southern state has. What makes Kerala even more interesting are the unique stories and traditions that go behind its popular attractions. Here are ten fun facts that made me fall in love with this beautiful destination, and I think they will make you want to visit, too!

Kerala is a heaven on earth
Kerala wears the title “God’s Own Country” like a badge of honour, and we may add that it lives up to it. Picture this: you wake up to see misty hills, palm-lined beaches, tranquil backwaters, and dense forests all in the same state. It is that rare a place where nature seems to be in its purest form. Each time I see pictures of Kerala put out there, I am astounded by the fact that travellers from all over the world fall in love with it.

It has a vast system of backwaters, which is the most beautiful
Kerala has no equal in terms of what it has to offer in terms of natural waterways. A very large network of lakes, canals, and lagoons, which extends for hundreds of miles, is also put forward by the traditional houseboats, which in turn present to you the tranquil ride through villages and coconut groves. For myself, I think a night out on a houseboat is the best travel experience out there.

Kerala reports the highest literacy rate in India
Kerala’s also known for its people, which is one of the state’s great assets. We see that in the very high literacy rates which the state puts up, which in turn is a result of great focus on education, health care and quality of life. It’s always great to see a place that values learning so much.

Kerala is at the heart of Ayurveda
If you have always wanted to try out the real thing in Ayurveda, go to Kerala. For ages, they have been doing ancient healing practices, herbal remedies and soothing massages here. Also, many of the visitors to Kerala go for the experience beyond the usual tourist sites, which also include the chance to renew oneself and the mind.

It is known as the Spice Garden
Long before the age of modern tourism, Kerala had a reputation in the world for its spices. Black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg from the state drew in traders from Europe, Arabia and Asia. Today, the scent of the fresh spices is one of the first things that greet visitors as they explore local markets.

In this place, Kathakali was born
Kerala is home to Kathakali, which is also one of India’s most spectacular classical dance forms. The performers in this art form wear very detailed costumes, colourful makeup, and tell stories through the expression and grace of their movement. Even if you do not follow the language, the performance is very much an experience.

Onam is a celebration of a different sort
Onam is the largest and most loved festival in Kerala. During this time, we see homes decorated with beautiful flower mats, families get together to enjoy traditional feasts out on banana leaves, and we have exciting snake boat races which take place statewide. It is more of a continuous celebration of Kerala’s culture and togetherness rather than a single-day event.

Wildlife Enthusiasts Will Love It Here
Kerala has a large variety of amazing wildlife, which includes elephants, tigers, leopards and the rare Nilgiri tahr. In the National Parks like Periyar, which are a part of the state’s network, you can have unforgettable experiences, which in turn give you a chance to see the animals in their natural habitat, and at the same time enjoy the very beautiful natural setting. It is a paradise for those who love nature and adventure.

Coconut’s All Around Us
Did you know that the name of the state of Kerala means “Land of Coconut Trees”? In that which is now home to the largest number of coconut trees per person in the world, the tree is very much a part of everyday life. From fuel to furniture, the uses are many, including, of course, in the wonderful variety of traditional crafts and also during local festivals. If you are a lover of dishes that include copious amounts of coconut, like I am, you’ll be in a coconut-related food paradise in Kerala’s cuisine, which is a must-try.

Munnar’s tea plantations are right out of a postcard
Munnar’s tea plantations are a visual delight, presenting some of the most picturesque landscapes in the country. In an unending stretch of green hills that are home to tea bushes, you feel as if you are in a picture postcard. As a travel enthusiast, I am visualising myself spending days there just to soak in the cool mountain air and to photograph the beautiful vistas.

Conclusion

Kerala is also not popular for just its beaches and backwaters; it is the little-known details, the traditions, and interesting facts that make it a special destination. As a person who is into exploring new places, among which I include the fun facts I came to love about Kerala, which in turn put it high on my travel list. If you are into nature, culture, great food, or just finding that which is out of the ordinary in a destination, these facts may just inspire you to plan your own trip to Kerala in 2026.
