Full Court Measurement

  • Length: 44 feet
  • Width: 20 feet (doubles) / 17 feet (singles)
  • Court Area: 880 square feet (doubles) / 748 square feet (singles)

The whole court is completely marked by lines that describe all the zones within which service, singles and doubles courts have different boundaries.

Service Zones

There are a number of service zones according to whether the service is of type singles or type doubles.

  1. Singles Service Area
  • Length: 15.5 feet
  • Width: 8.5 feet
  • Service Line Distance from Net: 6.5 feet

2. Doubles Service Area

    • Length: 13 feet
    • Width: 10 feet
    • Service Line Distance from Net: 6.5 feet

    Doubles has a shorter and wider service court compared to singles.


    Net Standards

    • At Posts: 5 feet 1 inch
    • At Center: 5 feet
    • Width: 20 feet
    • Depth: 2.5 feet

    The net divides the playing area evenly with two seams that are supported by posts on both sides of the court.


    Boundary Lines and Markings


    The sidelines for singles are 1.5 feet inside the outer boundary of the court. For doubles, the court is played on the full 20 feet width so the sidelines form the outermost boundary. Back boundary line applies for both singles and doubles matches. Short service line is 6.5 feet from the net.

    These markings also help the players and referees in determining in-play and out-of-play shots.


    Space Requirement and Clearances
    In addition, there should be a clearance of at least 3 feet around the court so that it would allow the game to be played fairly and safely:
    Minimum Clearance around Court
    Height of Ceiling: It should have the minimum height of 30 feet for the shuttlecock’s trajectory.
    Side Clearance: Minimum of 3 feet on either side of the sidelines.
    Back Clearance: This has to be no less than 5 feet along the back boundary line.

    Such space is highly needed for professional matches where players need to have ample space to move around each other.


    Badminton court sizes are properly regulated, whereby a good game of badminton is established between games that are played for either singles or doubles. It has a size of about 44 feet long while its width is measured on the sides by 17-20 feet long. Measuring the sizes permits the international standards to be respected by both players and coaches plus the designers themselves.
