Early Life
Born on May 29, 2006, in Chennai, India, Gukesh originates from a well-educated family; his father is an ENT surgeon while his mother works as a microbiologist. He took up chess late at the age of seven, which is late compared to many chess prodigies. The school is part of the Velammal group in Chennai, where he started his journey of chess. He sharpened his talent pretty quickly, guided by his first coach, Mr. Bhaskar.
Career
His career in chess is accompanied by several high-profile achievements. Gukesh’s first great achievement was at the Asian School Chess Championships in 2015, where he grabbed bronze in the Under-9 category. In 2018, he was awarded the World Youth Chess Championship title in the Under-12 category while also pocketing five gold medals in the Asian Youth Chess Championships. Gukesh became an International Master in March 2017 and gained the title of Grandmaster on January 15, 2019, when he was only 12 years and 7 months old, making him one of the youngest persons to hold the title. In 2023, he became the youngest player to achieve a FIDE rating of 2750 and won the Candidates Tournament in April 2024 to get a shot at the title of world champion.
