Razakar: The Silent Genocide of Hyderabad is a 2024 Telugu action drama directed by Yaata Satyanarayana. The movie explores the happenings at the time of the Hyderabad Liberation Movement of 1948, the atrocities perpetrated by the Razakars, a paramilitary group allied with the Nizam, and their resistance that ultimately spawned Operation Polo.

Plot Summary

Against the scenario of post-independent India, the film is centred on Hyderabad’s reluctance in acceding to the Indian Union. The Nizam is goaded on by his aide Kasim Rizvi (played by Raj Arjun), who wants him to form a separate Islamic nation. The movie depicts the consequent violence and carnage, mass conversions at gunpoint, and the hardships of the Hindus leading to Indian intervention to force the integration of Hyderabad.

Raj Arjun gives a solid performance as Kasim Rizvi, bringing out the character’s fanaticism successfully. Bobby Simha, Anasuya Bharadwaj, and Vedhika add much to the film, playing characters that represent resistance to tyranny. Though they have minimum screen space, their acting makes a positive impact on the script.

Direction and Writing

Yaata Satyanarayana the director tackles the topic with definite intentions to introduce a lesser explored page of Indian history. While the seriousness toward historical authenticity comes through in the film, the use of a few dramatised scenes that involve stylised songs and battle sequences might hinder its serious atmosphere. However, the screenplay does manage to incorporate the seriousness with which the given events have actually occurred.

The film’s music, while evocative, occasionally mirrors styles from other notable films, potentially affecting its originality. Cinematography and production design effectively recreate the era, immersing viewers in the historical setting.
