The Indian Administrative Service (IAS) has a very diverse pool of members, which includes engineers and humanitarians. In that group, we see Dr Arun S. Nair, a medical doctor by training, who went on to become a successful civil servant after placing at the top in the UPSC Civil Services Exam. A member of the Kerala Cadre, Arun S. Nair, is known for his very rare background in medicine, which he used to bring a unique angle to administrative work.
Early Life and Education
Arun S. Nair was born on May 11, 1992. From a young age, he was a product of Kerala’s culture of academic achievement. Prior to his foray into administration, he had a go at medicine. At the Government Medical College in Thiruvananthapuram, which is a preeminent medical institution in the state, he did his studies. Also, very early in his academic career, it was clear that he was exceptional, as we saw him place 4th in the very competitive Kerala Medical Entrance Examination.
Completing his MBBS was a rite of passage for Arun, which, while he achieved it, was not enough. In the field of medicine, which allowed him to serve individuals up close, what he found was that the Civil Services, which he joined in the end, gave him a wider stage to bring about social change at a structural level.

UPSC Journey and Rank
From practice in medicine to a career in the civil service is a great transformation. Arun S. Nair’s case is put forth as an inspiration for professionals who are looking to change fields. In 2019, he passed the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Exam with excellent results and secured the All India Rank of 55.
His success is also a personal triumph, but rather a display of his many talents. To the 2020 batch of the Indian Administrative Service, he was inducted, which saw him go back to his home cadre in Kerala, thus allowing him to serve the State that saw his growth and study.
Career and Administrative Roles
To date, IAS Arun S. Nair has held what are, for the most part, very key posts in the Kerala administration. His time in office has seen him take on roles that require quick decision-making and public engagement.
- Training and Assistant Collector: Like all other IAS officers, he attended intensive training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) and district-level training in Kerala.
- Sub-Collector, Idukki: One of his early key postings was that of Sub-Collector in Idukki. In Kerala, which has a very unique topography and environmental issues, this role was very important.
- Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE): In his role, which came out of his background in competitive exams, he served as the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations. In this position, he was in charge of the administration of state-level entrance tests, which is a high-pressure job affecting thousands of students.
Director of Social Justice Department: He also served in areas of social welfare, which included his time as Director of the Social Justice Department, which was focused on the welfare of marginalised communities.
Current Posting
As of late 2025’s recent administrative changes, IAS Arun S. Nair has been appointed as the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) for Sabarimala. That is a very sensitive and important post which, at the same time, is usually given out during the pilgrimage season, to handle which includes the large scale of devotees, logistics and security at the hill shrine. Before this particular assignment, he had been the Commissioner for Entrance Exams.
(Note: Administrative appointments may often change as a result of government shifts in personnel. The Sabarimala ADM post is usually also a special temporary assignment during the Makaravilakku festival season.)

Net Worth and Salary
In the Pay Matrix of the 7th Central Pay Commission, which is what all officers of the Indian Administrative Service are put to, Arun S. Nair, as a 2020 batch officer, would be in the Senior Time Scale (Level 11) or is approaching the Junior Administrative Grade.
At this level, the officer’s basic pay is in the range of ₹67,700 to ₹78,80 out of which are excluded benefits like Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA) and Transport Allowance. While the exact “net worth” of a civil servant is private information not made public like that of a corporation, we do know that what defines their financial picture is a stable government salary and benefits, which they amass as opposed to private wealth.
Conclusion
IAS officer Arun S. Nair is the epitome of the present-day Indian bureaucracy, which is young, professional and very much into the service aspect. His transition from a stethoscope to a file admin is a story that proves that anyone who has the will to serve can get there. As he progresses in his career with the Kerala cadre, his work is of great interest to aspirants and the public at large.
