At birth on April 5, 1992, in Baranagar, a small which is a neighborhood of Kolkata in West Bengal. Born into a modest family setting, Atanu’s early years did not see much affluence. His father was employed in a small-scale job to support the family, and financial straits were a constant issue.

Interestingly, in fact, Atanu didn’t have archery in his future plans as a child. Like many other kids, he tried out many things in his early years. What brought him to archery was almost accidental, which happened when we took a visit to a local sports academy. The sport caught his interest right away, and soon he found out that he had a natural talent for it. Despite our financial constraints, we supported his choice, which he made to pursue this sport.

Struggles and Training Journey

Atanu did not have an easy transition into professional archery. He had access issues to proper equipment and training facilities. Archery is a costly sport that requires high-quality bows, arrows, and coaching. For a family of moderate means, this was a challenge.

Also, he did stand out in terms of his dedication. He trained very hard and went on to get a spot at the Tata Archery Academy in Jamshedpur. This was a turning point in his life. At the academy, he got structured training, access to better equipment, and put himself in competitive settings.

Even at that, success didn’t come easy. He had setbacks and defeats, which at times left him questioning what he was doing. What made him stand out was his consistency and his drive to improve.

At first, Atanu Das’ name came up in the international scene. He put forward India’s case in many global tournaments, which in turn saw his rank improve. Also, it was his performance in the Olympics that brought about great recognition for him.

In the 2016 Rio Olympics and also at the 2020 Tokyo Games, which took place in 2021, he did very well, which is a point of note. At the 2020 Tokyo Games, which he participated in, he had one of his best performances to date, in which he beat better-ranked players and made it to the pre-quarterfinals.

Though he didn’t win a medal, he was respected worldwide. Also known for his cool head in very big games, which became his trademark.

In a different light, Atanu Das’s personal life, which is not as publicized, is that he is married to fellow Indian archer Deepika Kumari. They have a professional relationship as well as a personal one. Together, they have a very supportive and also a very competitive relationship in the same sport.

Unlike most other athletes, Atanu stays out of the media. He is known for his very private nature and reserved personality. He puts more into his performance than into publicity, which is also what keeps his private life off the public stage.

Another true aspect of his mental game is also. In archery, which is a mix of head and hand, mental and physical — that is what it is all about. Atanu has put in great work on his focus and coolness, which in turn has made him do well in high-pressure settings.
